Naledi Modupi (b. 1999) is a Johannesburg-based multidisciplinary visual artist from South Africa’s East Rand. Working across painting, illustration, sculpture, ceramics, and photography, she creates vibrant, emotionally charged works that explore African womanhood, identity, memory, and spirituality.

Inspired by the women who raised her and the cultural landscapes that shaped her, Modupi has developed a distinctive visual language defined by bold colour, expressive linework, pattern, and stylised portraiture. Her practice moves between tradition and modernity, drawing from African storytelling, personal memory, and contemporary visual culture.

While her early work celebrated the strength, beauty, and resilience of South African women, her practice has evolved into a deeper exploration of selfhood and spiritual inquiry. Through dream-inspired narratives, she investigates the intersections of womanhood, intuition, ancestral knowledge, and cultural inheritance. These imagined worlds become spaces where personal experience connects with broader questions of identity and belonging.

Characterised by flattened forms, playful figures, vibrant compositions, and layered symbolism, Modupi’s work makes conversations around African spirituality and feminine power accessible to contemporary audiences. Her visual storytelling invites viewers to engage with alternative ways of seeing, knowing, and understanding themselves.

Her work has been exhibited at South African art and design platforms, including Decorex, Latitudes Art Fair, and the V&A Waterfront. In 2023, she was named a Design Indaba Emerging Creative and has collaborated with brands such as Adidas, Converse, Mr Price Home, and Robertsons.

Today, Modupi continues to build a multidisciplinary practice centred on African femininity, storytelling, and spiritual imagination, contributing to a new generation of artists redefining contemporary African visual culture.
